“I’m going to run for a fourth term in Brazil,” Lula told Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the end of a bilateral meeting in Jakarta.

In his statement, the progressive leader noted that although his current term ends in late 2026, he is “ready to run in another election.”

Lula, who will turn 80 on Oct. 27, said that despite his age, he has the same energy he had at 30 and emphasized that this decision will strengthen bilateral relations. “We will meet many more times, and I will make the relationship between Indonesia and Brazil even more valuable,” he said.

Edinho Silva, president of the Workers’ Party, declared: “We defeated fascism at the polls in 2022 and the attempted coup d’état of January 8, 2023, but the defense of democracy remains a constant mission. President Lula has been rebuilding Brazil, strengthening dialogue, and reaffirming the pillars of a sovereign, supportive, and just country. In 2026, his reelection will symbolize the continuity of this historic commitment to the Brazilian people and the definitive consolidation of democracy in the country.”

The announcement came after the signing of several agreements on energy, mining, agriculture and technology, during a ceremony at Indonesia’s Presidential Palace. Lula and Subianto also agreed to move forward with a Mercosur-Indonesia Preferential Trade Agreement before next December.

Following his official visit to Indonesia, Lula will travel to Malaysia to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) leaders’ summit, where a possible meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump is expected.

Lula, founder of the Workers’ Party (PT), governed for two consecutive terms between 2003 and 2011 and returned to power on Jan. 1, 2023, after defeating far-right politician Jair Bolsonaro in the elections.
